PLATE 22 Two scenes of the pankration (from the Greek adjective, pankrates, ‘all-powerful’), the favourite sport of all at Olympia, which may be described as a combination of wrestling and judo, with boxing—almost ‘no holds barred’. (a) In this picture the lower pankratiast is conceding defeat by tapping his opponent on the shoulder. The judge’s whip is visible in the upper right-hand corner. This is on an Athenian cup of the late sixth century B.C.

(b) In this scene the pankratiasts are on the right. One is trying to gouge his opponent’s eye, an illegal action causing the trainer to bring his whip into play. On the wall behind hangs a bag for a discus. The figures at the left are boxers. This is also on an Athenian cup, of the fifth century B.C.
